Early Psychical and Spiritual Phenomena

The first rumors of psychical phenomena began during the plague years – tales of those so unhinged by the horrors around them that they began to warp reality itself. Though throughout the Victorian Era psychical powers had a minor, unsubstantiated presence, it was not until this time that doctors, scholars, psychologists and theologens began to document and study the subject. These new psychics were astonishingly powerful and so unhinged that ignoring them could have been as hazardous as dismissing an outbreak of the plague.

During this same time, ghostly manifestations began to occur. The higher the concentration of death their was in an area, the more likely it was that spirits would appear. Though the majority of these haunting were benign, there were powerful and malicious exceptions to this that spawned out of the worst horrors endured by man. Spirits were highly prone to unrest particularly in the hours preceding an animate attack.

The spirits ranged in power and intelligence wildly. Many were the mindless spawns of fear, only able to repeat a singular series of events again and again until they fade from existence. Others however are far more devious, and their malice is rooted in a dark intellect and cunning that allows them to adapt and plan their cruelty.
